APRIL 2015

Smart Cities will use 1.1 billion connected things in 2015 according to Gartner. This figure is estimated to rise to 9.7 billion by 2020. Governments and councils are under pressure to find ways to best use resources in balancing growing urbanisation and concerns for sustainable urban development while also addressing constant economic and technological change. These factors impact on issues of urban quality such as housing, economy, culture, social and environmental conditions and are shaping our Smart Cities.

M2M Connectivity will be exhibiting at CeBIT 2015 in Sydney next month. A showcase of Libelium sensor network platforms including Smart Cities, Smart Environment and Smart Parking will be a feature on the M2M/IoT Zone – M2M Connectivity’s stand C26. Javier Gabas, from the Libelium head office in Spain, will be on the stand to explain the new LoRa extreme range radio technologies on Libelium’s IoT sensors for Smart Cities and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Demonstrations of the speeds achievable by Sierra Wireless’s new AirPrime MC7549 LTE on different 700MHz networks will also be conducted on stand C26. Opengear demonstrations featuring their Failover to Cellular solution are also scheduled. Please refer to the details and registration for free entry in this newsletter.

Opengear ACM5004-G-I 3G Router

IoT:  Radiocrafts TinyMesh

Radiocrafts TinyMesh to be used in major contracts for the Indian Smart Metering market.

TinyMesh protocol has become the de-facto standard for enabling smart meters in India.  Radiocrafts has deployed more the 300,000 units in India in the past few years, with this number to double with the new contracts.  The solution has proven successful in smart metering and street lighting applications in India.

RadiocraftsTinyMeshThe TinyMesh system is a multi-hop, self-configuring and self-healing mesh networking protocol that is integrated in a compact RF module measuring 12.7 x 25.4 mm.

Adding this module to a utility meter, a two-way radio link is established to cover all utility meters in an area, at minimal cost.

Tech Tip: BGAN 9502 – Power Consumption

The BGAN 9502 unit has four different possible states of power consumption

1. When transmitting and / or receiving at full power the power consumption is <20W

2. When in narrow beam without transmitting (a state it will stay in for 90 seconds after last
    transmitting) <4W

3. When in idle mode (moved to regional beam after 90 idle seconds) <1W

4. There are two “off” states:

a/  If the RTU can supply >2.2V @ 1MOhm to pin #9 of the DB9 connector power consumption will be zero until the voltage is removed or

b/ Using Wake-on-LAN after the configured period of inactivity on the LAN the unit will turn off but still monitor the Ethernet for activity and consume <10mW (<50mW at 24V).

The values above are quoited for 12VDC unless stated otherwise.
