Low energy applications are key to the growth in M2M wireless technology.  Today’s estimate of nearly 10 billion devices in the world connected to the Internet (fixed and mobile) is expected to triple to nearly 30 billion by 2020.  This expected growth in the Internet of Things (IoT) means that for the connected things – often small devices with sensors and radios – efficiency is measured by the power consumption and the size of the device or chips.

Cellular connection requires an expensive power source relative to the cost of the sensor or small RF device.  A combination using local low power wireless technology to cover the distance between the M2M device, and a gateway connected to the existing infrastructure or the cellular network is starting to become commonplace.

At Electronex next month, M2M Connectivity will be showcasing the connectBlue product range including the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) modules which feature ultra-low power consumption and easy connectivity possibilities with smart phones and tablets and cellular gateways.  More information and free entry to Electronex is in this newsletter.

NEW NVO8C-CSM-BRD Card for GNSS

NV08C-CSM-BRD CardThe NV08C-CSM-BRD Card is quick and simple to integrate for navigation functions to mobile and portable devices. The NV08-CSM-BRD features flexible integration options, including active or passive antenna connection with automatic detection, antenna power supply and short circuit protection.

The NV08C-CSM –BRD is compatibile with existing GNSS systems such as GPS and GLONASS and Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS), as well as with newly deployed GNSS systems such as GALILEO and COMPASS.

With a highly sensitive receiver to capture and maintains satellite signals, Assisted GNSS (A-GNSS) and a dead reckoning option, the NV08C-CSM-BRD ensures more signal availability, accuracy and reliability for devices.  The NV08C-CSM-BRD features low power consumption even when receiving multiple GNSS and SBAS signals.

Accessories for Sierra Wireless AirLink GX400 Programmable Gateway

GX400 DC leadM2M Connectivity stocks a range of accessories for the Sierra Wireless AirLink GX400 and the GX400+WiFi programmable gateway.

GX400 accessories include:

–  A range of antennas from Wireless Solutions and Hirschmann Car
with options to suit either the GX400 or the GX400+WiFi.
–  Ethernet, serial, USB, IO and DC power cables
–  GX series brackets for easy and secure mounting of the Sierra
Wireless GX400 industrial cellular gateways onto DIN-rail.
Two mounts are available – a side-facing profile and a forward-facing profile.GX400 Din rail mounted

M2M Connectivity can also assist with integration of the GX400 and its use with AirVantage Management Services (AVMS). Coupled with AVMS, the GX400 is an ideal solution for a wide range of M2M applications.

NEW connectBlue – Additional WLAN channels

cB OWS 451 WLAN serial port moduleThe connectBlue embedded Wireless LAN (WLAN) modules now have an expanded frequency channel range to fully cover both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz ISM bands. Dual band functionality ensures a robust, interference-free connectivity 24/7.

The connectBlue WLAN module range comprises:
–  UART Serial Port Module OWS451,
–  SPI Module OWL221a,
–  SDIO Module OWL222a,
–  SPI Module OWL253.
These modules now encompass the 1-13 frequency channels of the 2.4GHz band and the 36-165 frequency channels (U-NII Band 1, 2, 2e, 3) of the 5GHz band

Tech Tip: How to enable direct communication to the 3G module
inside Airlink products

Telnet/SSH to Airlink Router and follow instruction below to enable passthru mode to talk directly to 3G module.
•             Type  at\apassthru then press enter
•             wait 20 seconds for an ok.
•             Once the OK is shown, you will be talking with the
Embedded Module.
•             Enter ATI to confirm this.

Now  you can issue AT commands to change some settings on the 3G module
