FEBRUARY EDITION OF CONNECTED |
February 2013 |
This month Telstra announced it’s planned expansion of the 4G network into the 900 MHz band to cater for users in rural and regional areas. Telstra’s 4G network on 1800 MHz currently covers around 40 per cent of the Australian population. The refarming of the 900MHz band from 2G to LTE could potentially affect 2G users who represent only a small percentage of Telstra’s customers. Unlike the US, there has been no indication by any Australian mobile carrier of a timeframe for switching off the 2G network. Last August, AT&T announced plans to shut down 2G GSM/ GPRS by Jan. 1, 2017. This shutdown will impact about 12 to 14 million devices currently on AT&T’s GSM network. M2M Connectivity is offering a discounted price for the NetComm 3G10-WVT Gateway which utlizes the coverage and speeds of the Telstra NextG network.
