JULY EDITION OF CONNECTED |
July 2012 |
M2M alliances are a recent development in the global M2M landscape with the aim to crack the code on how to offer cost-effective global M2M services that can span multiple network footprints. These alliances, one which involves Telstra and a number international operators, are set to create new models that may accelerate the growth of global M2M. June and July have been exceptionally hectic following up inquiries from CeBIT – many about M2M One services and our 3G router portfolio – and preparing for two upcoming trade exhibitions. M2M Connectivity will be exhibiting at the AHA 2012 Conference in Melbourne and the Electronex Electronics and Design Expo in Sydney. More details and registration for free entry is featured in this newsletter. We welcome new engineers to M2M Connectivity. Prashanth Phutane and Roland Hamouche join us with extensive electronics / telecommunications knowledge and experience and are proving to be valuable members of our team. End of Life Notice
Sierra Wireless has issued an End of Life notice for the AirPrime MC8790, MC8790(V) and MC8792 embedded modules. Important dates are: – Last time purchase orders will be accepted by the 31st August, 2012. – Final shipment must occur before the 31st December, 2012. Options as suitable replacements in the mini PCIE format are as follows: MC8795(V): 850/900/1900/2100 Mhz quad band HSPA with UART MC8090: 850/1900/2100 MHz tri band HSPA with UART MC8705/04: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz quad band HSPA with no UART The MC8795V is a product that is expected to go EOL end of 2013 so should only be considered as a short term option. The MC8090 does have a UART interface so is the best longer term option with minimal design change. The MC8704 (Data & Voice) and the MC8705 (Data only) provide support for 21Mbps downloads via USB interface. For further information regarding these EOL products and suitable replacements, please contact M2M Connectivity. |

Tech Tip |
Tech Tip: AT+CSQ Signal Quality Measurements The AT+CSQ command is used to read the received signal strength indication from your wireless module/modem. AT+CSQ +CSQ:, OK The dBm figure can be worked out using the following formula: -113 + n x 2 = dBm Where n is the value from the AT+CSQ response. Converting RSSI to dBm example (good coverage): AT+CSQ +CSQ: 31, 0 OK -113 + 31 x 2 = -51dBm Converting RSSI to dBm example (weak coverage): AT+CSQ +CSQ: 10, 0 OK -113 + 10 x 2 = -93dBm |
