The attention on M2M cellular connectivity in recent years has focussed on migration from 2G to 3G to LTE technologies opening up opportunities for new applications using higher data-rates.  However, speculation surrounds current low data-rate applications, often based on low-cost and long power life, which operate on networks that will phase out 2G.

This situation opens up new opportunities with a growing interest in alternative M2M technologies expected as some cellular networks approach the shut-off of 2G.   This interest will also be fuelled by the Internet of Things (IoT) which features multiple technologies and applications across sectors.  Cellular, low data-rate M2M satellite, short-range wireless, RF and wired technologies are significant areas to focus on during the growth of both M2M and IoT.

NEW Maestro M100 3GXT with GPS

Quake Q4000Kit with Quake Q4000 modem for Iridium satellite SBD connectivity with GSM connectivity and GPS. The Q4000 is fully user programmable and can be used for stand-alone applications using its high performance processor and a flexible Application Programmer’s Interface.  There is also an optional configuration software that lets you configure the modem without the need for more complex programming.  This configuration software allows the user to input settings for almost all features on the Q4000 platform. connectBlue Bluetooth Low Energy Serial Port Module OLS425/OLS426

cb OLS425/OLS426connectBlue’s Bluetooth low energy serial port module OLP425/OLP426 is a complete Bluetooth low energy OEM module featuring UART interface. This module has a complete embedded stack and application for replacing serial cables or accessing UART devices using Bluetooth low energy technology.

A single-mode module, the OLP425/OLP426 offers a long battery life.  The OLP426 has the same feature set as the OLP425 module but in an even smaller form factor.  The module is fully Bluetooth qualified and radio type approved for Europe, US and Canada. It also has the connectBlue standard interface for compatibility over time and radio technologies.

M2M One 0.5MB for ultra-low usage apps

M2M One SIM cardsM2M One has recently introduced a 0.5MB (500kB) data plan to their range of Individual capped plans and Grouped plans. The 0.5MB plan is best suited for applications that communicate infrequently, and where data protocols are highly optimised to reduce cost.

The new plan is one of many competitive and flexible data plans on offer to suit any M2M application. M2M One also offers a wide range of reliable and affordable SIM cards and managed services for 2G/3G M2M devices. SIM card formats include Mini SIM, Industrial SIM (ruggedised), MicroSIM, and solderable SIM chip format.

Tech Tip

Tech Tip:  GX400 GPIOs

Sierra Wireless GX400 (without IO-X card) offers 1×GPIO and 5×GPIO when IO-X card is installed. These Digital IOs can be triggered via SMS.

It requires the unit to be configured in control mode.Once the unit is configured in SMS control mode, you need to send “relay x y” where x is digital IO and y can be 0 or 1.

Apart from controlling Digital I/O, you can also check status of GX400. (Send SMS “STATUS”).

The reset command will reset the device in 30 seconds after the SMS is send to the unit (Send SMS “RESET”).

The command GPS replies with the current GPS location (Send SMS “GPS”)
