Home / Press Releases / Blair Fox goes live with 5G-ready connectivity for wind farms

Simon Hunter

The M2M-designed IoT solution, which went live in in April, has enabled legacy SCADA communication systems built-into older turbines to operate over 4G and 5G. The solution features Sierra Wireless FX30 modems and specialist M2M SIMs at each site.

“Faced with the shutdown of 3G and an aging communications infrastructure, we needed a solution to power remote operations, now and into the future,”

Tim Rosser Director at Blair Fox.

“We had previously relied on manual monitoring and maintenance, but as a small company this was not sustainable or viable given the remote and rugged locations of our turbines.

“M2M Connectivity designed and deployed a custom solution within weeks and what we now have is the peace of mind we need to run our turbines and deliver energy to our customers for years to come,” Tim adds.

Blair Fox recently purchased and dismantled twenty wind turbines in Italy. The turbines were transported to Western Australia, refurbished and installed.

The company supplies electricity at three sites, including one in Lancelin. It manages technical support, including device monitoring and maintenance, through a central operations centre in Perth.

Blair Fox had relied on a Circuit Switched Data (CSD) over GSM solution to communicate and monitor their turbines. This technology would have become obsolete following the imminent shutdown of the 3G network.

Blair Fox has implemented a system which is future proof and can be easily migrated as cellular networks evolve. We look forward to continuing our partnership and ensuring their communications infrastructure supports their growth and the evolving needs of their customers.”

Kat Dempsey, Senior Director Australia and New Zealand at M2M Connectivity – M2M One

The M2M Connectivity solution emulates CSD over IP allowing legacy systems to communicate seamlessly over 4 and 5G. Using the solution, Blair Fox can now reset and recalibrate each turbine remotely.

Press Release: Melbourne, Victoria. 1 June 2022

WA-based energy company Blair Fox has partnered with IoT technology company M2M Connectivity to upgrade its wireless communications infrastructure.

Blair Fox is an electricity company which imports and rejuvenates wind turbines and builds wind farms to provide renewable power in remote locations.

The communications upgrade was made in line with Blair Fox’s continued growth and its need to be able to remotely monitor and maintain turbine performance. The company’s turbines are deployed in isolated environments and deliver renewable energy to farms and agricultural businesses. Since its establishment in 1997, the company now operates forty wind turbines at sites in mid-west WA.
