Australia

During Australia’s increasingly frequent and intense fire seasons, communication is everything. Yet in many rural and remote regions, connectivity remains a major challenge – especially when connectivity infrastructure is affected or worse, damaged. To address this, the New South Wales Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS), the world’s largest volunteer-based firefighting agency, initiated a bold initiative to future-proof its communication infrastructure. They worked with Hypha and M2M Connectivity to develop a solution that could eliminate connectivity blackspots and ensure real-time situational awareness across even the most isolated fire zones.

The Challenge

Firefighters in rural and remote areas often face dangerous communication blackouts, with mobile service unavailable and infrastructure unreliable during emergencies. Without real-time data, live mapping, or coordination tools, teams are left operating in isolation. NSW RFS needed a resilient solution that could combine multiple connectivity sources, function independently of traditional networks, and withstand extreme conditions to ensure crews stay connected, informed, and coordinated no matter where they are deployed.

The Solution

Hypha, with the support of M2M Connectivity and Peplink’s Transit Pro E at its core, developed a Vehicle as a Node (VaaN) solution for the NSW RFS, transforming each fire vehicle into a fully functional communications hub.The Transit Pro E was selected for its rugged and ventless design, as well as edge computing capabilities that allows local data processing without additional hardware, accelerating response time in the field.

Each Transit Pro E utilized a combination of cellular connectivity, Starlink, and Hypha’s own mesh networking technology. The VaaN solution leverages Peplink’s SpeedFusion bonding to merge these different connections into a seamless channel, enabling uninterrupted communications and live streaming regardless of vehicles’ locations. Simultaneously, the router’s built-in GPS with dead-reckoning enabled NSW RFS to accurately locate its fleet.

The Result

With plans to roll out the deployment across 5,000 NSW RFS vehicles over the next three years, the VaaN solution marks a major milestone in Australian public safety technology. By combining Peplink hardware and SpeedFusion technology with Starlink and Hypha-Mesh technology, communication blackspots are being eliminated. NSW RFS now benefits from enhanced situational awareness through high-speed communication capabilities and improved operational efficiency with faster data transmissions. The impact also goes beyond firefighting, offering a new standard of mobile, reliable, and intelligent connectivity for emergency services across the board.
